Best Shopify SEO Apps in 2026 (Free and Paid)

The best Shopify SEO apps are the ones that do a job Shopify can’t already do for you. My short list by job: Booster or Smart SEO if you want one all-in-one suite with a free plan, Yoast or Plug in SEO if you want guided on-page work, TinySEO or Crush for image compression, Ilana’s JSON-LD for SEO or Schema Plus for structured data, and Easy URL Redirects for 404s at scale.

Most stores need one or two of these, not six. Shopify already generates your sitemap, canonical tags and basic structured data, and every extra app can add scripts to your storefront.

How I built this list: every app below was checked on its official Shopify App Store listing on October 5, 2026, for its name, developer, features and whether a free plan exists. The choices come from those documented features and from the workflow I use when I audit Shopify stores. Nobody paid for a spot, there are no affiliate links, and I haven’t quoted star ratings because they change weekly.

What Do Most Shopify SEO App Lists Get Wrong?

They compare feature counts. One app lists 30 features, another lists 40, and the bigger list wins. That’s backwards.

On Shopify, the deciding question for any SEO app is simple. Does it do something the platform doesn’t? Shopify’s own SEO overview says canonical tags are added automatically, sitemap.xml and robots.txt are generated for you, themes produce title tags, SSL is on by default, and structured data is built into Shopify themes.

So an app that “adds a sitemap” or “adds canonical tags” is selling you something you already have. In my experience, the second mistake is worse: installing three apps that overlap, then wondering why the product page carries two Product schema blocks and four extra scripts.

Which Four Conditions Decide the Right App?

Before installing anything, I answer these four questions about the store. Each one points to a different category of app, or to no app at all.

  1. How big is the catalog? Under about 100 products, you can write titles, meta descriptions and alt text by hand in the admin. Into the thousands, bulk editing and templates start to earn their cost.
  2. Does your theme’s structured data pass Google’s Rich Results Test? If it does, you may not need a schema app. If it’s missing reviews, shipping or return details you want shown, a schema app makes sense.
  3. Are you migrating or renaming lots of URLs? A migration creates hundreds of redirects at once. Shopify’s native redirect tool handles a CSV import, but ongoing 404 detection is where a redirect app helps.
  4. How many apps do you already run? If the answer is ten or more, start with an audit, not an install. My Shopify speed optimization guide explains why apps are usually the biggest speed variable on a store.

What Can You Do in Shopify Without an App?

More than most app listings admit. Here’s what’s built in, and where to find it.

SEO jobBuilt into Shopify?Where
XML sitemapYes, generated automaticallyyourdomain.com/sitemap.xml
Canonical tagsYes, automaticTheme output
robots.txtYes, with an editable robots.txt.liquid templateOnline Store > Themes > Edit code
Title tags and meta descriptionsYes, per pageSearch engine listing section on each product, collection and page
Image alt textYesProduct > click the image > edit alt text
URL redirectsYes, including CSV importContent > Menus > View URL redirects
Basic product structured dataYes, in Shopify themesTheme output (test it)
SSLYes, on by defaultSettings > Domains

My Shopify SEO checklist walks through each of these settings in order. Honestly, a store that works through that checklist first will need fewer apps than it thinks, and the apps it does install will have a clear job. I explain where apps sit in the wider order of work in my overview of Shopify SEO for store owners.

Best All-in-One Shopify SEO Suites

Suites bundle meta tag editing, audits, alt text, broken link checks and schema in one app. They suit owners who want one dashboard. The risk is paying for (and loading) features you don’t use.

Booster AI SEO + AEO Optimizer: Best Free Starting Point

Developer: Booster SEO. Free plan: yes. Paid plans start at $39/month as listed.

Booster scans the store for SEO issues, optimizes alt text, detects broken links, manages meta tags and adds structured data on paid plans. The free plan covers the SEO score, alt-text templates, broken link reports and manual audits.

Best for: small stores that want an issue scanner and alt text templates without paying yet. Watch out for: automated fixes. I’d review what “auto pilot” changes before switching it on across a large catalog.

Smart SEO AI and Image Optimizer: Best Budget Suite

Developer: Sherpas Design. Free plan: yes. The Pro plan was listed at $14.99/month.

Smart SEO covers meta tags, alt tags, a sitemap and noindex control, broken links and image optimization, with JSON-LD and bulk editing on paid plans. It also supports IndexNow, which notifies Bing and the other participating engines. Google isn’t on the IndexNow list of participating search engines, so don’t expect it to speed up Google indexing.

Best for: stores that want bulk meta and alt text editing at a low monthly cost. Watch out for: overlap. If your theme’s schema already passes testing, leave the JSON-LD feature off or you risk duplicates.

Plug in SEO: Best for Learning While You Fix

Developer: Plug in Useful. Free plan: no, a 7-day free trial. Plans start at $29.99/month as listed.

Plug in SEO runs a scanner for missing tags and broken schema, AI keyword research, title and description writing that you approve, schema tools and one-click broken link redirects. Its listing pitches it as a tool that teaches you how to fix issues yourself.

Best for: owners who want to understand each fix, not just apply it. Watch out for: page limits on the lower plan, which caps how many pages it scans.

Yoast SEO for Shopify: Best for Content-Heavy Stores

Developer: Yoast. Free plan: no, a 14-day free trial. Plans start at $19/month as listed.

Yoast brings its familiar SEO and readability analysis into the Shopify product editor, adds structured data, technical SEO fixes and a bulk editor, and offers AI title and meta suggestions. A higher plan adds AI visibility tracking.

Best for: stores with blogs and long product copy, especially teams who already know Yoast from WordPress. Watch out for: readability scores. They’re a writing aid, not a ranking factor, so don’t rewrite good copy just to turn a light green.

SEO Manager by venntov: Best for Ongoing Monitoring

Developer: venntov. Free plan: no, a 7-day free trial on each plan. Plans start at $9/month as listed.

SEO Manager handles meta tags, structured data testing, broken link and missing-page tracking, and 404 redirects. Its higher plans add out-of-stock redirects and automated broken link handling.

Best for: established stores that want alerts when something breaks. Watch out for: automatic out-of-stock redirects. A temporarily sold-out product usually shouldn’t redirect at all, so set those rules carefully.

Best Shopify Apps for Image Optimization and Alt Text

Image apps compress files, rename them and write alt text. Shopify already serves images through its CDN in modern formats, so the gain here is mostly smaller source files and better alt text, not a speed miracle.

TinySEO (Formerly TinyIMG)

Developer: TinySEO (former TinyIMG). Free plan: free to install, with 50 free image optimizations a month and a per-image charge after that. Paid plans start at $14/month as listed.

It compresses and resizes images, optimizes alt text and file names, and also offers JSON-LD, broken link redirects and lazy loading. In practice it sits halfway between an image tool and a suite.

Crush: Speed and Image Optimizer

Developer: Space Squirrel Ltd. Free plan: yes, with a one-time 25 MB allowance. Paid plans start at $4.99/month as listed.

Crush does one thing: it compresses images and renames files and alt tags automatically, in the background, with a 30-day backup. I like single-job apps. They’re easier to judge and easier to remove.

AltKing: AI Alt Text SEO and ADA

Developer: StarApps. Free plan: the listing shows the app as free.

AltKing writes alt text from templates using variables like product title, variant options and tags, and keeps it synced as you add images. It’s most useful for stores with many variant images, where hand-writing alt text for every color is unrealistic. Templates still need a human check, and my image alt text guide covers what good alt text says.

Best Shopify Schema Apps

Your theme already outputs basic Product structured data. A schema app is worth it when you need more: review ratings from a review app, shipping and return details, breadcrumbs or Organization markup. Before installing one, I always run a product URL through Google’s Rich Results Test and see what’s actually missing. Sometimes nothing is.

Ilana’s JSON-LD for SEO

Developer: Ilana Davis LLC. Free plan: no, a 7-day free trial. Listed at $399/year.

It connects the structured data fields Google uses for rich results and Merchant Center, supports many review apps, and keeps the markup updated when you change themes. The plan includes a structured data audit and ongoing monitoring.

Best for: stores where Merchant Center and review stars matter and someone wants the schema handled properly once.

Schema Plus for SEO

Developer: SchemaPlus Inc. Free plan: no, a 14-day free trial. Plans start at $10.99/month as listed.

Schema Plus adds Product, Review, merchant listing, Organization, breadcrumb and other schema types, with support for common review apps. Lower plans cap how many products get schema, so check your catalog size against the plan.

Watch out for: FAQ schema. Several Shopify apps still advertise it, but Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search in May 2026, so it won’t earn you a rich result. My product schema markup guide explains which properties actually matter.

Best Shopify Apps for Redirects and Broken Links

Shopify’s native redirect tool works, but it won’t tell you when a new 404 appears. These apps watch for broken URLs and help you fix them in bulk.

404/301 SC Easy URL Redirects

Developer: Shop Circle. Free plan: yes, a Basic plan with bulk redirects for broken pages. Paid plans start at $14.99/month as listed.

Paid plans add automatic 404 detection, alerts, redirect patterns and AI-suggested redirect targets with a confidence score you control. It also handles “live” redirects from pages that still load, which Shopify’s native redirects ignore.

Watch out for: AI redirect suggestions. Always check the target. A redirect to a loosely related page is often treated like a soft 404 anyway.

Redirect Hero

Developer: Lescote solution. Free plan: no, a 7-day free trial. Plans start at $2.90/month as listed.

Redirect Hero tracks 404s in real time and lets you create 301 redirects manually or automatically, with pattern rules and CSV import on the higher plan. It’s a light, single-purpose option. If you’re unsure which redirect type to use, read my 301 vs 302 guide.

Do You Need a Shopify Speed App?

Usually not. Shopify already handles hosting, the CDN, compression and caching, which many speed apps advertise as features.

Most real speed gains on Shopify come from removing things: unused apps, leftover app code, heavy sliders and oversized images. Shopify’s performance guidance says uninstalling an app doesn’t automatically remove its code from your theme, so after you remove one, check the theme for leftovers. Adding a “speed booster” app on top of a bloated store often means one more script to load.

Several suites above include lazy loading or minification. If you use one, test product and collection pages before and after, and check that the main product image isn’t lazy loaded. My Shopify speed optimization guide covers how to read Shopify’s web performance dashboard first.

My Verdict: Which Shopify SEO App Should You Install?

For most small Shopify stores, one free-plan suite (Booster or Smart SEO) plus Shopify’s native tools is enough. However, if your rich results are missing reviews or shipping details, add a dedicated schema app, and if you’re migrating, add a redirect app before launch.

My reasoning is simple. The jobs that move rankings on a Shopify store are titles, descriptions, collection structure and product content, and you can do all of those in the admin. Apps earn their place when they save hours on bulk work or catch problems you’d otherwise miss.

What I’d avoid is stacking. Two suites, a schema app and an image app often means three tools writing structured data and four scripts on every product page. One clear job per app, and nothing doing the same job twice.

When Does the Answer Flip?

  • If you have fewer than 50 products, skip the suite. Write titles, descriptions and alt text by hand and run the Shopify SEO checklist instead.
  • If your catalog runs into thousands of variant images, a template-based alt text app like AltKing saves more time than any suite.
  • If your team writes long product copy and blog posts, Yoast’s content analysis is a better fit than a scanner-first suite.
  • If you just migrated from another platform, a redirect app with 404 alerts matters more than anything else on this list for the first few months.
  • If your store already runs ten or more apps, install nothing new until you’ve audited and removed what you don’t need.
  • If you’re still building the store, get the theme and structure right first. Skyranko’s Shopify store design service sets up stores with clean SEO foundations, so you start with fewer gaps to patch with apps later.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Best Free SEO App for Shopify?

For a free all-in-one option, Booster AI SEO + AEO Optimizer and Smart SEO both offer free plans with meta tag, alt text and broken link features. For images only, Crush has a free plan, and AltKing is listed as free for alt text.

Do I Need an SEO App for Shopify at All?

Not always. Shopify generates your sitemap, canonical tags, robots.txt and basic structured data, and lets you edit titles, meta descriptions, alt text and redirects natively. An app helps with bulk editing, monitoring and richer schema.

Can Too Many Apps Hurt Shopify SEO?

Yes. Each app can add scripts that slow pages, and overlapping apps can output duplicate structured data. Uninstalled apps may also leave code behind in your theme, so audit apps regularly.

Are Shopify SEO Apps Safe to Use for Automatic Fixes?

Mostly, but review before you automate. Automatic redirects, AI-written meta descriptions and bulk alt text can all go wrong at scale, so test on a few products first and spot-check the results.
