Google Business Profile Categories List: Common Picks and How to Choose

A Google Business Profile category is a label from Google’s fixed list that says what your business is, such as “Plumber”, “Cosmetic dentist” or “Pizza restaurant”. You get one primary category and up to 9 additional ones, and you can’t invent your own. The Google Business Profile categories list runs to thousands of options and changes by country and language, so below you’ll find a verified list of the common categories by industry plus the method I use to find the exact right one.

Categories matter. A lot more than most owners think. Google’s own help page on editing your business category says it plainly: the categories you select affect your local ranking. I’m Mizanur Rahman, I run Skyranko, and the category field is the first thing I open in every local audit.

Why Is There No Honest “Full” Categories List?

Every “complete list” you find online is a snapshot someone scraped on a certain date, in one language, for one country. That’s it. Google adds, renames and retires categories without an announcement. Two trackers checked a few months apart will give you two different totals.

Language and region change the list too. Google’s Business Profile API won’t even return categories until you tell it which country and which language you want, which tells you the list was never meant to be one global, fixed thing. So a list pulled in US English won’t match what an owner in Dhaka or Madrid sees.

That’s why I won’t pretend the tables below are exhaustive. They’re the categories I see most often, with names checked against a current list. The only list that is always right is the one inside your own profile editor.

What’s the Difference Between a Primary and Additional Category?

Your primary category describes the core of the business. Additional categories cover real departments or distinct lines of work. The grocery store example Google gives is a good one: “Grocery store” as primary, with “Bakery” and “Deli” as additional categories because the store actually runs both.

Here’s how the two compare on the things that decide your choice.

CriterionPrimary categoryAdditional categoriesWhat it means for you
How manyExactly 1, requiredUp to 9, optionalPrimary gets the most thought
Shown to customersUsually shown under your business nameMostly used behind the scenesPrimary shapes the first impression
Ranking effectStrongest category signal in my experienceHelps you appear for secondary servicesPick primary by core revenue
Features unlockedMenus, booking, hotel details and more depend on itCan add related optionsCheck what each choice unlocks
Risk when changedMay trigger re-verificationLower, but still possibleChange one thing at a time

The “up to 9 additional categories” limit comes from Google’s bulk upload spreadsheet guide. My verdict is simple. The primary category is the decision that counts, and additional categories are support players you add only when they’re true.

The Mistake I See Most: Treating Categories Like Keywords

Owners often pick categories the way they’d stuff a meta tag. It backfires. A med spa adds “Hair removal service”, “Skin care clinic”, “Weight loss service” and six more, hoping to show up for everything. Google’s guidance says not to select a category for every product or service.

The test Google gives is short. A category should finish the sentence “This business IS a”, not “This business HAS a”. A hotel that has a restaurant inside isn’t a restaurant. A gym with a juice bar isn’t a cafe, and I cover what a fitness profile should highlight instead in SEO for gyms. Simple.

There’s one more rule people miss. If a department is independently owned and operated and faces the public, Google wants it on its own profile rather than stacked into yours. The health club with an independent cafe is Google’s own example.

Four Conditions That Decide Your Primary Category

When I help a client choose, four things settle it. Service categories, rankings and features all hang on these, so I work through them in order.

  1. Where most revenue comes from. A dental office that earns most of its money from implants and veneers leans toward “Cosmetic dentist”. A family practice that does cleanings and fillings stays with “Dentist”.
  2. How specific Google’s list gets. Google says to choose specific over general, like “Nail salon” instead of a broad salon label. If no specific category exists, you pick the closest general one.
  3. What the top local competitors use. Their primary category tells you what Google already rewards for your main search.
  4. Which features the category unlocks. Google says restaurants can add menus, reservations and order links, and health and beauty businesses can add booking buttons and service lists.

Google Business Profile Categories List by Industry

These are common categories grouped by industry. I checked each name against a current US English category list, but always confirm the exact wording in your own editor, since names vary by region.

Home Services and Trades

Category (exact name)Use as primary whenCommon additional pairings
PlumberPlumbing is the main jobDrainage service, Water damage restoration service
ElectricianElectrical work is the coreLighting contractor, Electrical installation service

House cleaning serviceHomes are your main clientsCarpet cleaning service, Window cleaning service, Janitorial service
LocksmithLock work is the main jobEmergency locksmith service
Handyman/Handywoman/HandypersonSmall mixed repairsAppliance repair service

Trades are where I see the most category padding. A roofer adds “General contractor” because the crew once built a deck, and suddenly the profile competes in a pool it can’t win. Keep the pairings to work you’d happily take a call for tomorrow.

HVAC is the one real judgment call. Climate decides it. In a hot climate where most calls are about cooling, “Air conditioning contractor” can be the sharper primary. Where the work splits evenly across the year, “HVAC contractor” describes you better.

Health, Dental and Wellness

Category (exact name)Use as primary whenCommon additional pairings

Cosmetic dentistCosmetic work drives revenueTeeth whitening service, Dental implants provider
OrthodontistBraces and aligners onlyNone needed for most

Physical therapistIndividual practitionerSports massage therapist
Physical therapy clinicMulti-therapist clinicPhysical therapist
Medical spaMedical-grade aesthetic treatmentsSkin care clinic
OptometristEye exams leadNone needed for most
VeterinarianGeneral pet careEmergency veterinarian service, Animal hospital

Health categories split into two kinds: the practitioner and the practice. “Physical therapist” describes a person, while “Physical therapy clinic” describes a place with several therapists. If a single clinician runs their own profile inside a bigger clinic, the labels should reflect that difference.

Only add “Emergency dental service” if you really take urgent patients. Patients who call at 7 p.m. with a broken tooth and get voicemail leave angry reviews. That hurts more than the category ever helped.

Legal, Finance and Real Estate

Category (exact name)Use as primary whenCommon additional pairings
Personal injury attorneyInjury cases are the coreLawyer
Family law attorneyFamily matters leadDivorce lawyer
Estate planning attorneyWills and trusts leadLawyer

AccountantGeneral accountingTax preparation service, Bookkeeping service
Insurance agencyYou sell policiesNone needed for most
Real estate agencyA brokerage or teamReal estate agent, Property management company
Mortgage brokerYou arrange loans from lendersMortgage lender
Credit unionA member-owned financial co-opATM

Law firms tend to go too broad. “Lawyer” is a real category, but a firm that lives on car accident cases is throwing away relevance by using it as primary. I’d put the practice area first and keep “Lawyer” as a supporting label.

In finance, the words carry legal weight. A mortgage broker and a mortgage lender are different businesses, so don’t claim both unless you actually lend.

Food and Drink

Category (exact name)Use as primary whenCommon additional pairings
Pizza restaurantPizza is the menuPizza delivery, Italian restaurant
Italian restaurantFull Italian menuWine bar
Coffee shopCoffee is the main saleCafe, Bakery
BakeryBaked goods leadCake shop, Wedding bakery
BarDrinks are the coreCocktail bar, Wine bar
CatererOff-site event foodNone needed for most

Restaurants have more categories than any other group, split by cuisine, by format and by meal. Cuisine usually beats format for the primary slot. “Thai restaurant” says more to a hungry searcher than “Takeout restaurant”, and you can still add the format as an extra.

Automotive

Category (exact name)Use as primary whenCommon additional pairings
Auto repair shopGeneral mechanical repairBrake shop, Transmission shop, Oil change service
Auto body shopCollision and paint workAuto glass shop
Car washWashing is the main serviceSelf service car wash, Car detailing service
Car detailing serviceDetailing without a wash tunnelCar wash
Tire shopTires leadAuto repair shop
Used car dealerPre-owned salesCar dealer

The car wash versus detailing choice trips up a lot of owners. If most revenue comes from wash packages, stay with “Car wash”. If you run appointment-based detailing with no tunnel, “Car detailing service” is the honest primary, and I explain how that plays out in search in my car wash SEO guide.

Beauty, Fitness and Personal Care

Beauty owners often rent chairs or rooms to independent pros. If the nail tech or massage therapist runs a separate business, the category belongs on their profile, not yours. That’s Google’s independent-department rule applied to a salon. For the rest of a salon’s setup, from photos to the booking button, see my salon SEO guide.

A note on my own trade. I couldn’t find a category named “SEO agency” in the list I checked, so SEO firms usually land on “Internet marketing service” or “Marketing agency”. That’s a good example of why you search the editor before assuming a label exists.

Specific or Broad: Which Category Wins?

The specific category wins for most single-focus businesses because it matches the searches customers actually make. Someone typing “cosmetic dentist near me” is a better fit for a veneer-focused practice than a person searching “dentist”. Google also treats specific categories as including the general ones above them. Its own example is that “Golf resort” implicitly covers “Resort hotel”, “Hotel” and “Golf course”.

However, the broad category is correct when your business genuinely spans several specialties evenly. A family law firm that does divorce, custody and adoption in equal measure is better described by “Family law attorney” than by picking “Divorce lawyer” and hiding two-thirds of the work.

My rule of thumb is short. Go as specific as you can while the label still stays true to at least half of what you sell, and when two options feel equally close, pick the one your best local competitors already rank with.

When the Answer Flips

The verdict above changes in a few real situations. These are the ones I run into.

  • If a specific category would mislead customers, stay broader. A general dentist who does one veneer a month shouldn’t call the practice a cosmetic dentist.
  • If your specific category doesn’t unlock a feature you rely on, test the trade-off. A restaurant that also caters should keep a restaurant category as primary, because that’s what carries menus and reservations, even if catering orders are growing faster.
  • If you add or edit a category and Google asks you to verify again, pause further edits until that’s done. Google’s help page warns this can happen after any category change.
  • If the business is seasonal, don’t swap your primary category each season. Pick the year-round core and use additional categories for the rest.

How Do You Find the Exact Right Category?

Start inside the profile editor. Not a list online. Choose “Edit profile”, open the business category section and type slowly, because the field suggests matches as you go. Try synonyms, too. “Attorney” and “Lawyer” return different options, and so do “Car wash” and “Detailing”.

Next, look at who ranks. Search your main service plus your city on Google Maps and note the category shown under each of the top results. Google usually shows only the primary category there, so it tells you what the winners chose for their core.

Then write down your shortlist and run the “is, not has” test on each one. Anything that fails goes. What’s left is usually one clear primary and two to four honest additional categories.

If you’re in a trade I’ve covered before, the industry guides help. I covered the profile setup, category included, for contractors, and category mistakes often travel with messy listings elsewhere, which is where local citations come in.

What Happens When You Change Your Categories?

Three things can happen. None is dramatic if you plan for them. Google may ask you to verify the business again. Your edits can take a few days to show, since Google says changes to business info can take up to 3 days to appear. And your visibility for some searches may shift while Google re-reads the profile.

My process is boring on purpose. One change. I edit one field, write the date down, and check the Performance section of the profile a few weeks later. That view shows the search terms people used to find the profile, so you can see whether the new category brought in the searches you wanted.

If your profile vanished after a category edit, don’t panic-edit it back. Work through my diagnostic flow for a Google Business Profile not showing up in search first, because the cause is often something else.

Who Should Handle Your Categories?

Most owners can set categories themselves in half an hour with the method above. It gets harder with many locations, hybrid businesses that serve at a storefront and on the road, or a category change that tanked calls. That’s when a second pair of eyes pays off. Honestly, it’s cheaper than a month of lost calls.

Category selection is part of every profile review my team does in our local SEO service. If you only want an outside opinion first, the free audit covers it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Many Categories Can a Google Business Profile Have?

One primary category plus up to 9 additional ones, so 10 in total. Most businesses don’t need all 10. I usually end up with a primary and two to four additional categories that pass the “this business is a” test.

Can I Create My Own Business Category?

No. Google’s help page says you can’t create your own category. If the exact label you want doesn’t exist, choose the closest general category and describe the specialty in your business description and services list.

How Many Google Business Categories Are There?

Thousands, and the number moves. Google changes the list over time and it varies by country and language, so third-party totals disagree with each other. Treat any exact count as a dated snapshot, not a fixed fact.

Will Changing My Primary Category Hurt My Ranking?

It can shift rankings while Google processes the change, and it may trigger re-verification. If the new category is a better match for what customers search, rankings for those searches usually improve afterwards. Change it once, with a reason, and then leave it alone while you measure.
